Hello, everyone. I’m Paige Reed, and I recently had the honor of sharing my story on the Mending on the Fly podcast. I’d like to take a moment to recap what the host, Devin Carlson, and I discussed and give you a glimpse into the heart and soul of Piper's Peak, a nonprofit organization I founded with Deborah Reed, Lauren Bertelson, Brett Wilson, Rob Webb and Derek Osen, to introduce women and girls to
the healing power of fly fishing. Piper's Peak is more than just an organization; it’s a living tribute to my late sister, Piper, and her adventurous spirit.
The Birth of Piper's Peak
Piper’s Peak was born from a place of deep grief and love. In 2019, my family was shattered by the tragic loss of my sister, Piper. She was a beacon of light, always full of life and adventure. As we grappled with our sorrow, we searched for a way to honor her memory. Piper had a passion for fly fishing, so it felt only natural to create an organization that embodied her love for the outdoors and her adventurous spirit. Through Piper's Peak, we aim to provide women and girls with experiences in nature, just as Piper would have wanted.
Programs and Events
At Piper's Peak, we offer a variety of programs designed to introduce participants to the joys and benefits of fly fishing. From workshops and retreats to annual fly fishing events, we create safe, supportive environments where women and girls can connect with nature, learn new skills, and share their stories. It's incredibly rewarding to see participants find peace and joy through these experiences.
Overcoming Challenges During the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for Piper's Peak. Like many others, we had to adapt quickly to new restrictions and find creative ways to continue our mission. Despite these obstacles, we experienced tremendous growth. Virtual workshops, online content, and socially distanced events became essential in keeping our community engaged. It was a tough period, but it also showed us the resilience and determination of our community.
The Healing Power of Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is more than just a hobby; it's a meditative and healing practice. There’s something profoundly calming about the rhythmic casting, the serene natural settings, and the focus it requires. For me, and for many others, fly fishing has been a way to process grief, find clarity, and reconnect with the world around us. It’s a powerful tool for healing, and I’m passionate about sharing that with others.
My Personal Journey
Starting Piper's Peak and learning to fly fish has been a deeply personal journey. I started from scratch, navigating the challenges of leadership and finding my own path to healing. Running a nonprofit has its hurdles, but it's also been incredibly fulfilling. Every day, I see the impact we’re making, and it reinforces my belief in the power of resilience and the importance of pursuing our passions, even in the face of adversity.
Open Conversations About Grief
One of the core values at Piper's Peak is fostering open conversations about grief and loss. It’s so important to break down the stigma surrounding these topics. By sharing our experiences, we can find comfort in knowing we are not alone. Through storytelling and community support, Piper's Peak helps participants navigate their healing journeys, offering a safe space to talk openly about their emotions.
Impact on Families and Future Generations
Piper's Peak is making a profound impact on families and younger generations. By providing opportunities for women and girls to engage in fly fishing, we’re not only honoring Piper’s legacy but also instilling a love for nature and outdoor activities in the next generation. The skills and experiences gained through our programs empower participants to face life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.
Get Involved
There are many ways to support Piper's Peak and get involved with our mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or participating in our events, every contribution helps further our cause. By joining the Piper's Peak community, you can help continue Piper’s legacy and support the healing journeys of countless women and girls.
Conclusion
My story and the mission of Piper's Peak are reminders of the healing potential found in nature and community. Through fly fishing, Piper's Peak offers a sanctuary for those dealing with grief, helping them find peace and strength in the face of loss. As we continue to grow, we remain dedicated to honoring Piper’s adventurous spirit and providing hope and healing to all who seek it.
